“Family Stories and Others”
An Exhibit of Mixed Media Works by Carla House
The exhibit will open on Friday, February 8, with a reception for the artist from 7 to 9 pm, and run through March 28. Admission is free and the public is invited. “My series began years ago as an exercise in retrieving childhood memories and recording dreams and reflections,” says the artist. “The work combines watercolor and collage techniques and employs the use of symbolism and metaphors to weave the stories together.” The gallery is located on the second floor of the main building in the Callanwolde mansion at 980 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta. "FRANKLIN" One-Man Show
Callanwolde presents Marty Barrett's one-man theatrical portrayal of Benjamin Franklin. FRANKLIN is a fascinating 90-minute play, perfect for history buffs and theatre fans. Experience the humor, power, and inspiration of the ultimate American mind, live on stage! Written, directed, and performed by Marty Barrett, whose extensive research tells the story of Benjamin Franklin's life and times starting as a young man and includes the full breadth of Franklin's style, politics, and inventive spirit. Marty Barrett has worked as an actor, writer, and director in Atlanta for 30 years, including 20 years with Young Audiences at Woodruff Art Center, and he also teaches acting classes at Callanwolde. “Arias from Messiah”

Several Dancers Core has initiated an artistic collaboration between its dance company, CORE Performance Company, and Atlanta Baroque Orchestra to present “Arias from Messiah”. The dance enlivens the beauty of select arias from George Frideric Handel’s masterwork Messiah, adding color, movement, and meaning to an already rich text and score. The Junior League of DeKalb County will host "Giving Gala", a silent and live auction. All proceeds from the auction will support the Junior League of DeKalb's "A Space of My Own" project, which provides comforters and bedding to children living in community shelters and foster homes in DeKalb County. The "Giving Gala" event will be held in the elegant setting of Callanwolde and will feature a raffle, open bar, great food, and entertainment for all. Tickets: $25. Artists of the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center Clay Guild have been invited for a second year to participate in the Artist Market of the Druid Hills Home and Garden Tour, April 18-20. The Artist Market will be located at St. John's Lutheran Church in Druid Hills, Friday and Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, from 1 pm to 5 pm. Works are created by potters with five to 25 years of experience in hand building and wheel throwing. "Fun and Games" The Art of Ben GoldmanBen Goldman Sweetdreams
The exhibit will open on Friday, June 6, with a reception for the artist from 7 to 9 pm, and run through July 25. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Working directly on the surface of actual game boards, Goldman superimposes a multitude of symbols, words and objects, creating both physical and intellectual layers. “Game boards are popular culture items and are easily related to by people of all ages”, says the artist. “I use the game board titles as my core idea for the art pieces. The titles allow me to explore a wide variety of human behavior. Dominance, love, greed, anger, addiction and consumption are some of the topics I explore.”

His many musical styles have produced an artist that is unique in the world of music. Gene will perform original compositions as well as classical and contemporary favorites. Then at 8:15, the open mic readings are open to all poets who would like to read their original poetry. Kevin Cantwell has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Utah where he served as Co-editor of Quarterly West, and currently teaches English at Macon State College. His reviews of poetry have appeared widely, and his poems have been published in many magazines including Paris Review, The New Republic, Shenandoah, Ninth Letter and 32 Poems. He has won the Academy of American Poets Prize and has been a finalist for the Walt Whitman Award twice. In 2002 New Issues Press published his first book, Something Black in the Green Part of Your Eye. He has a forthcoming chapbook,

Seaborn Jones is the author of two books of poetry, Drowning from the InsideOut and Lost Keys as well as three chapbooks, Black Champagne, X-Ray Movies, which received the Georgia Author of the Year Award in Poetry, and most recently Getaway Car in Reverse. His poems have appeared in Southern Poetry Review, Pearl, Rockhurst Review, River Styx, Louisiana Review and elsewhere. He has received two awards from the Georgia Arts Council and a scholarship to the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. A native of Macon, Georgia, he now lives in nearby Lizella.

Celebrate the power of storytelling each month as Callanwolde showcases the Atlanta area's best stories, storytellers and storytelling traditions. Led by series coordinator Bev Center, audiences will enjoy a diverse group of professional and student storytellers as they entertain audiences with tales for all ages. September features the Hinds Family of Storytellers: Jane, Dudley and their granddaughter Rachel. Jane Hinds has been telling wonderful, enchanting stories for about 20 years...Beatrix Potter stories for little children, or fascinating historical stories for big children and adults. Her storytelling experience includes The Carter Center, Southern Order of Storytellers Winter Festival, Wesley Woods Senior Center, and various schools, churches, and libraries. Dudley Hinds is a retired Urban Planner. For 20 years he taught Real Estate and Urban Planning at Georgia State University. Recently he became a storyteller, taking to it like a duck to water. Currently, trains and locomotives are his storytelling interest. Rachel Hernandes is 9 years old and has been telling stories for several years. "Breath of Bamboo" is a selection of color photographs from a two-year exploration of the southeastern landscape.
