“FACES OF THE YARDS OF CLUTTER”
PHOTOGRAPHS BY TOM ZARRILLI
Tom Zarrilli has been photographing, writing about and documenting yard sales since 2004. His cultural and sociological examination of Americans and the clutter they sell in their yards has resulted in several exhibitions in the southeast. In "Faces of the Yards of Clutter," Zarrilli offers intriguing and amusing portraits of the sellers and the objects they no longer want in their lives and living rooms. "In this exhibit, photographed entirely in Atlanta neighborhoods, you may recognize a neighbor," says the artist, "or perhaps something you purchased at a yard sale." In addition to his photographic work, Tom Zarrilli has exhibited conceptual, performance and multimedia works at galleries in Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia. He currently resides in Atlanta. ANNUAL MEMOIR READING
THE MEMOIR: STRANGER THAN FICTION
Students from Callanwolde’s advanced memoir seminar present excerpts from their memoirs-in-progress. This literary performance includes readings by guest artist Thaddeus Rutkowski, a New York-based award-winning author.
“A memoir is not a biography. It is not a balanced portrait. It is the writer’s personal story; his impressions of friends, relatives, mentors and public figures. In the end, it’s a matter of light. It is as if the author stands outside a house at dusk with a flashlight and a toolbox. He can shine light on any window; but once chosen, he must open it all the way and drag the reader in with him through the shadows to the deep, scary stuff,” says instructor June Akers Seese.
$10 General Admission. Tickets are sold at the door. The event is held in the Samuel Goldman Retreat located on the Callanwolde grounds at 980 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta 30306. A champagne reception will follow. This program includes adult language and situations unsuitable for children. For more information, call (404) 872-5338.
